This crash course offers a first look into the hobby, led by local Southern Maryland beekeepers who will share the basics of what it’s like to keep bees in our region. You’ll learn key concepts, gain a sense of what’s involved, and discover whether beekeeping might be right for you.
This class is designed as a starting point — just enough to spark your interest and prepare you for the next step in your beekeeping journey. Lecture based with hands on equipment tutorials, handouts and breakout sessions with beekeepers from around the region.

Beginner Beekeeping 101 Class
Led by seasoned regional beekeepers with a proven track record of successfully overwintering hives, this intensive course offers a comprehensive foundation in beekeeping practices. Participants will gain instruction in equipment construction, package installation, Nuc acquisition, pest and disease management, and the development of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies.
The program includes two full days of classroom-based instruction followed by 2 hours of fieldwork in a local apiary. This structure ensures that participants not only acquire the theoretical knowledge needed to succeed but also develop the hands-on skills essential for managing hives with confidence.
